by Janet Schulman (editor); written and illustrated by numerous authors and illustrators

This large hardcover picture book gathers 44 of some of the most memorable and beloved children’s books from our time, all with their original illustrations handsomely reproduced.

Stories include Madeline, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, The Stinky Cheese ManA Chair for My Mother, Goodnight Moon, Make Way for Ducklings, Millions of Cats, Miss Nelson is Missing, Where the Wild Things Are, Good Night, Gorilla, The Story of Babar, Amelia Bedelia, Winnie-the-Pooh, and dozens more.

The content ranges from concept books and wordless books to picture books and short read-aloud stories (each coded for level), and represents a range of childhood themes and reading needs: ABCs, number and colour books, stories about going to bed and school; stories about growing up, siblings, parents and grandparents; animal stories, fables, magical stories, stories about everyday life—and more.

Each story is selected and introduced by distinguished children’s book editor and publisher Janet Schulman.

Over 300 pages with colour illustrations from the original stories throughout, with supplementary material of authors’ and illustrators’ biographies, a guide to reading ages with corresponding books found within (and coded throughout), a note to parents by the editor, and an index of titles, authors, and illustrators.

308 pages pages.

On a personal note: I love anthologies of children’s stories that have been carefully selected. This is unequivocally the case with The 20th-Century Children’s Book Treasury, of which the dust jacket claims is “unparalleled in its scope and quality” and I would agree. Hands down, this is the best selection I’ve seen of children's picture books published in the 20th century.

Condition: near fine copy in a near fine jacket (hardcover); near fine (softcover).

Published by Alfred A. Knopf, 1988.
